Improving Online Access for Patients

Over the coming months, we will be increasing the functionality of our online services. This will allow patients to be able to make requests via our website for services such as Medication Requests and Queries, Reviewing Test results,  and Requesting GP letters.

These will be introduced on a phased basis to allow both our staff and our patients to become accustomed to the new services.

We have started by making FIT notes (previously know as a sicknote ) available to request online. FIT Notes are also sometimes called Doctors notes or Medical certificates. More information on FIT Notes can be found here

To request a FIT note, please click here to complete the online request.

Please note that FIT note requests will be completed within 5 working days so please do not call the surgery for any updates during this period.

New Phone System

We are excited to inform you that we have upgraded our telephones to a new cloud-based system.

Patients will benefit from several new features including:

• Patient Callback, which allows the patient to hang up, save their place in the queue and automatically receive a call back from a receptionist when they reach first position. This saves patients both time and money by shortening the call.
• The telephone number you are calling from will automatically retrieve the relevant patient record linked to that number, which will speed up the care process.
• Better quality lines for clearer conversations.
• Call recording of all calls, for staff training and development.

Our staff have received full training however, we would ask patients to be patient while we transition to the new system.

Importantly, our telephone number has not changed.

We hope and expect patients will experience a more efficient and user-friendly service.

Quit Smoking – National No Smoking Day 13th March 2024

Stopping smoking is one of the best things you will ever do for your health.  The chemicals in cigarettes and other smoking products kill thousands of people in the UK every year.  The toxins in cigarettes affect your body while you’re smoking and after the cigarette is finished.  The chemicals in cigarettes damage the structure of your blood vessels, including the arteries that carry oxygen rich blood to your heart and brain.

By giving up smoking, you protect your body from the harm of dangerous chemicals such as:

Carbon monoxide: This is a poisonous gas that you breathe in when you smoke. It means your blood cells can’t carry oxygen around your body as well as they should. Having high levels of carbon monoxide in your blood greatly increases your risk of heart and circulatory diseases.

Tar: This is also in cigarette smoke and can cause cancer. When you breathe it in, 70% of the tar stays in your lungs and damages them. Cigarettes labelled ‘light’, ‘mild’ or ‘low tar’ are misleading. All cigarettes are bad for your health.

Nicotine: This is the addictive chemical found in cigarettes. It increases your heart rate and blood pressure. Untreated high blood pressure permanently damages your arteries and your heart

When you stop, you give your lungs the chance to repair and you will be able to breathe easier.  There are lots of other benefits too – and they start almost immediately.

The NHS offer free stop smoking services including free counselling and support to anyone who wants to quit smoking.  You can go to group support sessions or, in some areas of the UK, you can have one-to-one support.  You can receive daily emails for support, join the Quit Smoking support group on Facebook and download the NHS Quit Smoking app to help you quit smoking and start breathing easier today!

Goodbye to Dr Attah

We are sad to say that Dr Attah who is one of the partners at the surgery will be leaving us at the end of December. We want to express our sincere gratitude for the care and dedication she has provided to our patients over the years and whilst we we are sad to see her go, we wish her the very best with her future endeavours.

We understand that continuity of care is crucial, and  we are in the process of recruiting a new GP to ensure a smooth transition for all Dr Attah’s patients.  We will let these patients know of their new GP in due course.

Covid and Flu Vaccinations

COVID & Flu Vaccines

Please be aware that we are offering the COVID & Flu Vaccination clinics this autumn. The first clinic is from the 30th September and will run on clinics throughout October.

We will be inviting our eligible registered patients in batches via text message/email or phone call from the beginning of September. Please can you avoid calling our surgery unless you have had an invitation. If you are unable to attend the first offered clinics, we will be sending second and third invitations to anyone who hasn’t already had these vaccines.

If you have already booked your appointment and receive an invitation, please ignore this message. You do not need to call the surgery to confirm your appointment.

We will be vaccinating our patients with Pfizer (Cominarty).

If you do not wish to have either vaccine, please send us a message via the NHSapp/SystmOnline or email bswicb.widcombesurgey@nhs.net  and we will update your records.

Same Day Urgent Appointments

We are experiencing an increase in the number of patients that are turning up at the surgery to see a GP for on the day treatment without having made an appointment.

Please be advised that all patients requiring on the day care need to ring the practice in the first instance. We will then take some details regarding the nature of your enquiry and you will then be placed on the list to receive a phonecall back from the clinician best suited to assist you. If after speaking to you the clinician feels you need to be seen face to face, they will then make this appointment for you.

Thank you for your understanding.
